Plumbing problems we see in Toronto homes
A lot of Toronto houses were built before modern water lines and plastic drains were common. In older neighbourhoods the pipe from the street to the house can still be lead or galvanized steel. Those lines corrode, restrict flow, and are worth replacing when the water pressure drops or the city is already replacing the main out front.
Mature street trees are the other regular cause of trouble. Roots find small cracks in clay sewer laterals and grow into a mat that stops everything from the kitchen and laundry. Snaking may open a hole for a while. A camera shows whether the pipe is cracked, belled, or full of roots, which is what decides if the line needs repair instead of another cleaning.
Winter adds burst pipes in unfinished basements, garages, and outside walls. If water is running where it should not, shut the main valve and call. We also clear floor drains and stack blockages in houses that have been renovated so a basement bathroom shares an old drain that was never sized for it.
